Waldenburg – Following an invitation from Bangkok's Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), R. STAHL held a three-day workshop on explosion protection according to IEC standards in Thailand’s capital in August, 2006. MEA, a gov-ernment-owned corporation, is responsible for supplying energy in Bangkok and its surroundings. The coverage area includes the neighboring provinces Nonth-aburi and Samut Prakan and has a total population of more than eight million. A team of R. STAHL experts provided training for approx. 25 participants, focusing on topics such as "Explosion protection basics", "Basics of intrinsic safety", "Comparing NEC and IEC technology", "Ignition protection types" and "Classifi-cation of Ex-zones". Like in many other Asian countries, skilled workers as well as their supervisors in Thailand are often poorly aware of up-to-date explosion protection standards. Practical knowledge about the implementation of stan-dards or even basic explosion protection knowledge can be found lacking. As a result, the level of safety is low. Severe accidents are a common occurrence, not least because US installation procedures according to NEC500 are often randomly mixed with the European or IEC-based approach. A comparison of NEC and current IEC technology during the workshop was therefore met with particular interest. Due to the advantages of IEC solutions, which allow for sim-pler, safer and more cost-efficient installation and maintenance, MEA is planning to exclusively implement IEC technology in all its plants. The workshop found great appreciation among all participants. It will be continued at the end of this year with a return visit that will bring MEA employees to R. STAHL's company headquarters in Waldenburg, Germany.
